    _planet phatt is a total taste of the 90s for Ableton, with 18 instruments + 598 samples straight from the phattest rack mount instrument of all time.


    Ahh, the 1990s, when endless sub-genres of music became cool. Eurodance, big beat, trip-hop, new jack swing, neo-soul, g-funk, happy hardcore, drum & bass, techno, trance - some are still with us today, while some are best forgotten. E-mu Systems’ Planet Phatt sound module was the epitome of the 90s aesthetic and technology. A synth with ROM samples was cool and cheap, and so was this phatt pink rack. Yes, it actually existed, and this was a real thing.


    Cody Taylor of Fiend Recordings sampled 18 different patches, including all those classic 90s sampled “stabs” (yeah those ones), plus drums, bass, synths, and keys. After all the phattness was rendered, he ported them into 18 different Ableton instrument devices, and added a little extra phatt for phatt’s sake. The result? Old school phatt meets modern controls and effects.


    Did we mention that Cody also made the rad demo song for this?


    Feel free to use any of the 598 samples outside of the instruments. Try not to use every single one of the 61 “stabs” in the same song.


    Cody is a super phatt producer, songwriter, and studio owner here in Vancouver. He’s also one of the nicest people we know. He probably smiles when he sleeps. Shouts out to Cody for making this collaboration so phatt.

      We always want some sort of extra percussive thing or texture to accent our beats, but making new rhythms from scratch and finding samples is a chore. What if we could just load up an instrument with a bunch of useful patterns that we could blend in parallel and be done with it? We set off and sampled our favourite studio shakers and tambourines, and brought them into Ableton Live for something s-s-special.


      We used over 60 Max for Live devices in this pattern bending and blending power tool, then sprinkled on some cool effects, and 41 macro presets to show you the ropes. Automate the macros for pattern presets and FX for maximum shakiness.


      From straight time to fake time, these are the shakes.

      _lab grown drums for Ableton




        _lab grown means mutated kick and snare design for Ableton. If you're tired of injecting the same tired, generic drums samples from 2012 into your song's DNA, then this is for you. What's the formula? We sampled multiple acoustic kicks, toms, snares, paint cans, plastic bowls, metal ting-tings, cardboard boxes, paper, and glasses (+ a whole lot of other things we can remember). We filled all these things with random objects sometimes, and then hit them with sticks, mallets, brushes, shoes, hands, and whatever else was laying around the lab. We also just straight-up dropped things from a height in a warehouse space and sampled away. We tried to keep our recording chains for capture pretty different, so we changed things up a lot as we sampled different things. Ribbons, condensers, tube mics, vintage mic preamps, LA-2As, 1176s, Pultec, MAAG, and API EQs were all harmed in the making of this release. We figured we'd do some more mutating, so we processed all of the samples and added blend-able FX layers using many different outboard and pedal effects boxes. Our software plug-ins were lonely, but the effects we captured were alive! The 3 Ableton rack instruments give you a kick, snare, and ambient/room snare. Turn the macro knobs and choose your favourite samples. Blend all the out-of-the-box layers and FX for each sound together to create the perfect Frankenstein one-shot drum sample. These racks are the perfect antidote for gentrified drum tracks. New drum sounds are always the best medicine. • 655 one-shot drum samples.
