_rhythm ace SSS052

_rhythm ace brings old tech new tricks with 436 loops, 54 Ableton 11 grooves, plus a Drum Rack to make your own beats. The Ace Tone Rhythm ACE, or the Roland Rhythm77 a.k.a the TR-77, is the drum machine with many names, and perhaps the one that started it all.

Let's have a talk, shall we?

The TR-77 plays preset patterns in 18 different rhythm styles and 6 different variations of each style. It's also possible to "button mash" and create combo styles. Obviously, the combinations of patterns are endless. It uses 13 different sounds that are all analogue synth generators. There are a few level controls for the different sounds. It has no exact BPM control or sync capabilities. It has a mono output. It's safe to say that no two units are the same.

We sampled all the "stock" patterns at 3 different tempos with a variation and mix of our choice. We also sampled a bunch of combination "button mashed" patterns. On the way to the recorder we stayed true to the original sound, but gave it some modern love with some analogue gear (Neve 1073, LA-2A, Maag EQ4, CAPI LC53a & an Elektron Heat). Our intention was to keep it all analogue, so we also created 3 different analogue FX processed versions of each loop, using a BBD delay, a spring reverb, an XQP Optical Disrupter, a Standard Audio Stretch, an Roland SVC-350 vocoder, a "Wasp" Filter, and a WMD Ultrafold wavefolder. It's what we thought would be cool, and we made a good effort to bring this classic sound forward without removing its 1972 aesthetic.

For those who want to program their own patterns, we made a super-playable Ableton 11 Suite Drum Rack with its 13 separate sounds and a handful of custom effects.
